Details

Electric motors consume about 70% of generated
electricity worldwide. With an increase in power
consumption the improvements in the efficiency of AC
motors will have major energy savings. Higher
efficiency can be achieved in thin sheet of Fe-Si
steel with ~150 microns grain size and a 100 fiber
texture normal to the sheet, which maximizes the
easy magnetization direction in the sheet. The Goss
texture with a single easy magnetization direction
in the Fe-Si sheet has been produced for
transformers for many years by multistage
processing, but the desired texture for motors has
not yet been produced by any multistage processing.
This technological challenge is addressed in the
book through detailed studies of the deformation and
recrystallization processes in continuously cast and
directionally solidified Fe-Si alloys, with columnar
grain structure with the desired fiber texture. A
multistep thermomechanical processing has been
successfully developed for recovery of preferred
100 fiber texture. This book should be useful to
senior students of metallurgy, materials science and
engineering and to researchers in laboratories and
industry.
