Children's Folk songs in Igbo Society
Details
Folk song is one of the cultural activities in Igbo culture that has suffered much neglect in this recent time due to the upsurge of new mode of recreational activities such as football game, film watching and all other manner of games from various Media and Cable Networks. Also the quest for greener pasture has dispossessed children of the privileges of staying close to their parents at leisure hours and listening to folk songs with its attendant cultural values. This work is an attempt to package some of these folk songs beyond its local boundaries through the collection and notation of fifty Igbo folk songs used by children at different stages of their development, so that they can be scholarly accessible. It is a five chapter work covering songs from birth to adolescence. Textual analyses of the songs were provided to bring out the aesthetic values and appreciation of the songs in Igbo culture. The work is hoped to enhance folk music scholarship, as well as challenge the prevalent global expectations.
