This book deals with Ukraine''s early-modern and modern popular and elite culture and the place of Cossacks in it. "Cossack Motifs in Ukrainian Folk Legends" introduces the English-speaking audience to Ukrainian folk legends about the Cossacks, which were recorded and published during the 1800s. Its author pays specific attention to the collectors of folklore, their informants, the collecting situations, storylines and motifs, offering readers an insight into how the 19th century Ukrainians must have perceived Ukrainian Cossacks. This work also features some of the original texts and fragments as well as their English translation.

Roman I. Shiyan received his MA in History from Arkansas State University (USA, 1995), the Specialist Diploma in History from Zaporizhzhia National University (Ukraine, 1996) and the PhD in Ukrainian Folklore from the University of Alberta (Canada, 2006). He is an author and co-author of two books and several articles on the history of Ukrainian Cossacks during the late 18th century. Recent research of Dr. Shiyan deals with Ukraine's early-modern and modern popular and elite culture and the place of Cossacks in it.
