Efficacy of marine macroalgae in management of hyperlipidemia
Details
Hyperlipidemia is defined as a condition in which there is an excessive amount of body fat. This is one of the most commonest diseases all over the world. The incidence of hyperlipidemia has dramatically increased and has become epidemic in the western as well as eastern world. The etiology of hyperlipidemia is multifactorial, with genetic, environmental, socioeconomic and behavioral or psychological influences, with an increase in the related morbidity and mortality. This study was undertaken to investigate the potential role of Caulerpa prolifera and Sargassum subrepandum methanolic extract in management of hyperlipidemia and its complications in adult female rats. These results indicated that C.prolifera and S.subrepandum algal extracts play a vital role in ameliorating hyperlipidemia and its complications particularly oxidative stress and inflammation. These findings may provide new concept for the development of effective marine natural therapy for hyperlipidemia and its associated serious complications.
