Energy Consumption in Wireless Sensor Networks
Details
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been intensely studiedbecause of their potential applications and technologicalchallenges. However, most analysis of WSN performance has used onlycomputer simulations, with greatly simplified assumptions about theperformance of the underlying circuits. WSN network lifetimedepends upon communication protocols. The Gossip-Based SleepProtocol (GSP), implements routing and MAC functions in an energyconserving manner. However, measuring network lifetime with even aprotocol as simple as GSP is problematic. Multiple approaches aredescribed for measuring energy consumption in terms of transmit andreceive phases, minimum voltage supply required for operation andtransmit power. Also multiple methods are described for measuringthe lifetime of a sensor node and describing end-of-lifetimebehavior. The final result is a model of energy consumptiondescribing the performance of GSP on the Mica2 platform, which isthen compared with other models. Academic researchers, professors, students and industrial researchers in the field of WSNs orconcerned about energy consumption by general wirelesscommunications devices will be interested in this book.
