For fans of A MAN CALLED OVE, maybe there's a little grump in every one of us . . .

A funny, uplifting and life-affirming tale of grumpiness, perfect if you loved Eleanor Oliphont is Completely Fine , Rachel Joyce's The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry or Ruth Hogan's The Keeper Of Lost Things

Maybe there's a little grump in all of us . . .

The Grump, at eighty years old, is more focused on death than life; building his own coffin and keen to write his will in ink - who can trust technology, after all? - he knows that everything was much better in the old days.

But when the Grump finds himself in hospital after falling down his basement steps, his life passes before his eyes. Thinking of the people closest to him and reflecting on the changes society has brought about, he realises he must come to terms with the cards life has dealt him.

With warm humour and a wry look at family and relationships, The Happy Days of the Grump is sure to bring a smile to even the grumpiest among us.

This is a quirky and idiosyncratic read with a definite voice of its own. It took some pages to get into that voice but when I did, the pages flew by. The Grump could be so many people who I have met and I loved the originality of the story. Full of humanity and a wry sense of humour

Klappentext

Everybody recognises the Grump, everybody knows a grump. And maybe there's a little grump in every one of us...

The Grump is a man from the past. A man who knows that everything used to be so much better in the old days.

When The Grump hurts his ankle after falling down his basement steps, he has to spend a weekend in Helsinki for physiotherapy. The Grump doesn't like this because it means taking a taxi, not being able to look after his wife, who has Alzheimer's, and having to spend time with his family.

The Grump's daughter-in-law, who lives and works in the city, isn't keen to spend time with The Grump either. Her boss has asked her to look after Russian businessmen and she's supposed to close a major deal over the weekend. It doesn't make her any happier when The Grump decides to 'help' with the deal.

Finally, The Grump has to face his useless son to become the father he never was, teaching him how to take care of his loved ones. Something The Grump has never been able to do.

The only thing that's for sure is that somebody's day will be ruined.
