Details

American schools are becoming more diverse and teachers in all parts of the country are dealing with issues related to adolescent development compounded by increased diversity among students. This book is designed to challenge middle level educators to look at traditional middle school philosophy through an examination of social, economic, and cultural conditions. New or experienced teachers may gain insights into the lives of their students and consider ways educators can promote a supportive learning environment. The main emphasis is theory into practice, with theory integrated throughout.

Zusammenfassung
"The book is inspiring and renders an authentic and experienced fresh voice in middle school literature. The sincere honesty and sharing as a White female educator provides a different voice in the contemporary diversity literature that should be included among all scholarly work in multicultural education and middle school learning. Kathleen Chamberlain provides another view in the expanding area of Whiteness studies and multicultural education. This book should be included on the shelves of all educators as a resource that draws upon compassion and provides different perspectives in curriculum theory, critical theory, feminist theory, and constructivism from an autobiographical perspective." (Andrew Jackson, Sr., Academic Advisor and Instructor of Education, College of Education, The Pennsylvania State University; President of the Pennsylvania Chapter and Director of Region Three of the National Association for Multicultural Education)
"Kathleen Chamberlain has written a passionate and informative book that provides the groundwork for looking deeply at preparing middle schools for a diverse society. She argues for school-wide and individual changes in our conceptualization of middle school education, which should begin with dialogues. As conversations surrounding middle school education gain prominence across the nation, this book will serve as a stimulus for all stakeholders." (Ruth McKoy Lowery, University of Florida; Author of 'Immigrants in Children's Literature' (Lang, 2000))
