Details

Parasitic diseases remain among the greatest public health problems in the world. Malaria is a widespread infectious disease in tropical and subtropical regions. It has increased in recent years, probably due to the increase in resistance to the drugs used. Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is considered a re-emerging disease, mainly due to the deterioration of health services in endemic areas. Only a few drugs are available and some of them are only effective during the early phase of the disease or difficult to administer due to their high toxicity. Synthetic methods using isatoic anhydride as starting material have led to two series of novel compounds. The series of reduced derivatives show more potent antiparasitic activities than their ketone analogues. The compounds studied appear to be effective on both phases of trypanosomiasis. The most promising compound showed significant activity against both P. falciparum and T. brucei brucei strains.
