This refers to the hierarchical structure of institutionalized, full-time educational activities stretching from the primary school through to the university. However, the term also refers to: a) Any sub-system within the formal structure such as pre-school, primary school, secondary school, an individual school, university, individual classroom or particular course of study. b) Any "non-formal" yet systematic teaching-learning process aimed at particular objectives but conducted outside the formal system such as extension service for farmers, an on-the-job training or a work-oriented literacy programme. A system is an entity composed of: A number of parts; The relationships of those parts; and, The attributes of both the parts and the relationships. The benefits of the education system take many forms: economic, non-economic individual and societal. There is need to understand or work with any system; and, therefore, the need to know the system's components and also how these components are functionally related.
