Grasses are the most fascinating and unique group of flowering plants. However Poaceae displays superficial resemblance with Cyperaceae and Juncaceae. This group enjoys the most adaptive capabilities of various habitats ranging from arid, mesophytic, aquatic to desert and mountainous habitats with good soil binding ability and preventing soil erosion. The members of Poaceae are naturally gifted with breeding potentials requiting in several varieties/cultivars of wheat, rice and other cereals. Polyploidy is extremely wide spread in plants and majority of the grasses are of polyploid origin. Cereals of this group constitute the major grain and fodder crops of the world and meets the major proportion of food of humans and animals. Grasses compose the most popular and palatable fodder in swanas, grass-lands and pastures for grazing animals. Grasses provide grassy grounds for supports and for esthetic purpose lush green lawns in gardens and parks.

Dr Akbar Ali Meo previously worked as lecturer in botany / biology in Punjab higher education department Govt of Punjab and presently working as an officer in Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad. He obtained Ph.D in 2005 in plant taxonomy.Prof. Dr. Mir Ajab Khan has obtained Ph.D in 1984 in plant systematies from Leicester University (UK).
