Radek Martínek (born August 31, 1976 in Havlí k v Brod, Czechoslovakia) is an ice hockey defenceman, currently playing for the New York Islanders of the NHL. Martínek was an 8th round selection, 228th overall by the Islanders in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Islanders in 2001, and has been a mainstay on their blueline since that time. With the exception of Rick DiPietro, Martinek has the longest tenure with the team of any current player. Martínek won a gold medal at the 2001 World Championships as a member of the Czech national team. Ice hockey (frequently simply called hockey in countries where it is the most popular form of hockey) is a team sport played on ice, in which skaters use sticks to direct a puck into the opposing team's goal. It is a fast-paced physical sport.
