Religious Hypocrisy in Mongo Beti's The Poor Christ of Bomba
Details
During colonial period, European missionaries came in Africa under the pretext to civilize and convert them to Christianity. Hypocrisy was the major tool. This work examined religious hypocrisy during the colonial Cameroon as presented in Mongo Beti's The Poor Christ of Bomba. We attempted to expose the extent to which religious hypocrisy impacted on new converts during this period. The first part deals with the matter of missionaries especially their coming in Africa in general and in Cameroon in particular, the second with the missionaries' hypocrisy and focus on their strategies and the third tackles the consequences of hypocrisy. The work recommends the governments to enact lows controlling churches and worship houses, religious leaders to recognize the primacy of wisdom as a gift of the Holy Spirit and the followers to know that faith is not opposed to reason; rather, it requires the full development of reason.
