The 6 metre class was one of five sailing events held as part of the Sailing at the 1948 Summer Olympics programme. It was the ninth appearance of the event. Races were held off the coast of Torquay. The Finnish boat Ralia is the former Swedish boat Ali Baba. Four of the boats including gold medal winning Llanoria and silver medal winning Djinn will also compete in the 1952 competition. Sailing is the art of controlling a boat with large (usually fabric) foils called sails. By changing the rigging, rudder, and sometimes the keel or centre board, a sailor manages the force of the wind on the sails in order to change the direction and speed of a boat. Mastery of the skill requires experience in varying wind and sea conditions, as well as knowledge concerning sailboats themselves.
