Scientific Communities in India and China
Details
Exploring formation, growth and changing structure of
scientific communities in India and China, the book
highlights that since late 1980s these countries are
witnessing new challenges with the onset of
liberalization and globalization.Eventually,
scientific communities in these countries are poised
for confrontation with a new challenge posed by
knowledge intensive technologies. With this new
change, the social control of science is being
governed by market forces with declining role of
State as well as that of factors internal to science.
As such,scientific communities are undergoing
metamorphosis,as never before in the changed scenario
of socio-political and economic environment. The new
order involves many actors,such as
enterprises,universities,research institutions,
government, venture capitalists and so on,where basic
research is often a product of highly focused applied
research rather than the other way round, and the
most leading edge research is team based and trans
disciplinary. This is leading to networking of
scientific communities with active participation of
universities, industry, financial institutions and
the government in a Tetra Helix mode.
