The XVI Paloma O'Shea International Piano Competition is to take place in Santander, Spain's Palacio de Festivales, from July 25 to August 7, 2008. 20 pianists, selected through three shortlists of candidates (Madrid, Moscow and New York) are taking part in the event. The Dresden Philharmonic will accompany the three finalists in the final, scheduled for August 6. Both the Semi-finals and the Final will be broadcast through TVE. The Dresdner Philharmoniker (Dresden Philharmonic) is a symphony orchestra based in Dresden, Germany. The orchestra was founded in 1870 and gave its first concert in the Gewerbehaussaal on 29 November 1870, under the name Gewerbehausorchester. The orchestra acquired its current name in 1915. It receives financial support from the city of Dresden.
