We admire the ancient wonders today, but somebody had to build them. No heavy machinery, no semitrucks, no cement mixers. How was it even possible to build such wonders as pyramids and temples in ancient times?

Each one of the seven wonders of the world is unique, their beauty and magnificence has been lauded by the greatest poets and writers of the ages. In How the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World Were Built, you'll learn about the techniques and tools used to build them, what it was like to be there during the construction of them, and more!

We'll touch on each of the seven wonders of the world:

  • The Colossus of Rhodes
  • The majestic Great Pyramids of Giza
  • The Lighthouse of Alexandria (which withstood earthquakes and gales)
  • The spellbinding Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  • The breathtaking Temple of Artemis in Ephesus
  • The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  • And the Hanging Gardens of Babylon (inspiration for so many myths and legends). Come with us as we go back in time and learn the secrets of how these gems of ancient architecture were created!

Very commendable book for educating young classicists.  All of the original seven ancient wonders get the same three-spread treatment – on the first an artwork of the finished thing, complete with text in snappy little paragraphs about where the building or thing was and who was responsible, while the second is taken up with a work-in-progress image and details of how the labour was managed etc, and in the third instance we get more context.  Therefore we learn of the 'sun boats' that delivered the newly-mummified Pharaohs to their pyramids, the life and death of Ephesus, and so on.  This smacked of quality throughout, although some of the text did use fairly advanced vocab as if this sought to live in secondary school libraries and not primaries – and while my star rating may have been biased by me not seeing a similar book on the subject before in all my years, I'm grateful to have seen this one at least, and can only recommend it.  A strong four stars. ― John Lloyd, reviewer
