Next Generation Power Systems
Details
One of the world's grand energy challenges is to enable integration of a large share of renewable energy resources at a low cost in the power grid. However, a major hurdle in achieving this goal is the insufficiency of the current control and management technologies to address the unique characteristics of renewable resources, e.g., their intermittent nature, lack of inertia, and susceptibility to violation of operational limits. This book discusses, implements, and validates control and management strategies that are expected to significantly improve the performance of the distributed energy resources. This work conceptualizes a hierarchical framework for the control of microgrids and develops the notion of potential functions for devising intermediate set points to ensure feasibility of operation of the system. This book also proposes and evaluates a simple yet elaborate distributed strategy to mitigate the transients of controllable devices of the microgrid using local measurements. This book is especially useful for professionals, new and experienced engineers, and graduate students interested in the future electric power delivery system.
