A Comparative Study of Gender Representation in the Bible

While feminist resistance to conventional gender
representation had primarily taken place in the
traditional spheres of politics and economics, few
have challenged religious frontiers. This is
significant since many claim that the historical
subordination of females had been legitimated and
propagated through religious ideologies and
institutions. This study represents an original
contribution to feminist critical analysis of gender
representation by pioneering a comparative study
between two translations of the bible, demonstrating
that the NIV s use of non-inclusive language results
in conventional patriarchal representations with the
male as the dominant universal sex, while the NRSV s
use of inclusive language results in resistive
interpretations, thus representing females as
unsubordinated and on equal terms with males. With
comprehensive analysis at the level of the word,
phrase and discourse, coupled with alternative
readings from The Woman s Bible and The Gospel of
Mary, this book is an ideal read for academics in
the fields of Gender Studies and Feminist
Stylistics, as well as seekers of the
truth.
