A Delineation of Markan Christology with Reference to Messianic Secret

This research seeks to investigate whether there is the messianic secret in the Gospel of Mark by going back to the origins. Scholars are generally agreed that there exists the messianic secret in the Gospel of Mark. Other scholars, however, argue for the non-existence of the messianic secret in the Gospel of Mark. The research problem under this study is that the contradictory positions given by scholars cannot both be true, logically speaking. This research argues for the existence of the Messianic secret in the Gospel of Mark. The research employs the historical critical method which involves source criticism, form criticism, reduction criticism and textual criticism. In addition, the study makes use of the socio-scientific method that tries to locate the messianic secret in the community of Mark. Lastly, the study also uses the comparative method that examines and notes similarities and differences among different scholars who contribute to the debate concerning the messianic secret.
