It borders to the north Santiago de Las Vegas; to the east with San Antonio de las Vegas and Batabanó; to the south with La Salud; and on the west with San Antonio de los Baños. It was founded in 1874. In the 1990s, the Cuban government built an electronics satellite communications site at Bejucal with assistance from the Russian government. In 1999, the Cuban and Chinese governments signed an agreement to allow Bejucal to use Chinese communications satellites. It has been reported that the equipment at Bejucal has been used to interfere and intrude on U.S. VOA broadcasts directed at Cuba and other countries such as Iran.
