Brillouin, Raman and NMR Characterization ofRare-Earth Doped Glasses
Details
This book covers experimental results of Brillouinand Raman light scattering as well as NMRspectroscopy measurements elucidating structural, vibrational, elastic, photoelastic and magneticproperties of europia doped soda magnesiaaluminosilicate glasses as a function of the contentof individual glass components to provide newknowledge related to the mechanism underlying theformation of holographic gratings in these materials. The effect of rare earth oxide doping, alumina andsoda substitution for silica are discussed in termsof changes in measured hardness, compressibility, polarizability, polymerization of glass network andcoordination of glass formers. Structuralimplications for measured photoelastic constants arealso discussed. The strength of the holographicstorage signal in these photonic glass systems isanalyzed from the view point of variety of importantfactors, such as the number of the excited europiumions, high-energy phonons associated withSi-nonbridging oxygen vibrations, weakly bound sodiumions charge balancing tetrahedral alumina complexesand stability of the traps for mobile light ions.
Autorentext
Dr. Zhandos Utegulov is currently working at University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy of organic crystal structures to study their phononic and optical properties. Prior to UNL he was developing surface plasmon enhanced Brillouin spectroscopy at National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder, Coloroado.
