Cannabis sativa

Marijuana (Cannabis sativa) has been used medicinally, recreationally and spiritually for thousands of years throughout the world. Practitioners in South Africa recommended it for a variety of ailments from the mid-19th century through the 1920s. This plant has an enormous potential for expanding the bioactive metabolite library. Compounds can be extracted from its trichomes, cell suspension cultures and hairy root systems. Moreover, these compounds can also be obtained by employing fungal, bacterial or plant cells to biotransform its main phytochemicals.
