Details

Studies indicate that most creative African writers shifted from the theme of colonization to other recurrent themes such as feminism. Chinua Achebe, one of the famous writers in the Africa, dealt with feminism .The aim of this research was also to investigate women's roles in the social, cultural and political structure of the country as well as the nation as depicted in the selected novels. The study uncovers female characters' social significances and power hierarchies with the features of Marxist feminist criticism. The result of the analysis indicated that women's role in the new independent nation, Nigeria, is vital. Women are made increasingly powerful in decision making by being strong in exposing the misrepresentation of their rights in their respective culture. Therefore, the trend of feminism, as reflected in the female characters of the three novels, clearly implied that Achebe's attitude towards women's roles in Nigeria and in the continent is progressively changing for better.Author:Gebremariam Haile is a senior Lecturer,Researcher and Head of Research and Publications of the University College.
