Subtitlers are artists that fight with big words and make them look very small. This book is about how subtitlers manage the balancing act between numerous constraints and the preservation of the original text. The main difficulties are described, such as the change of mode, the cultural differences and the polysemiotic nature of subtitles. Furthermore, different translation theories will be examined and used as a framework for examination. This book is a defence of the subtitler's work and an explanation on how "Come on bitch!" becomes "Beeil dich!" in MTV Reality Soaps.

Mag. Marlies Payerl was born in Carinthia. She studied English and American Culture and Literature at the Karl-Franzens-University Graz and at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Furthermore, Mag. Payerl joined a German B.A. programme at the Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt, which she finished in 2011.
