Gender Differences in the Economic Status of the Elderly: Malaysia
Details
Economic Status of the Elderly in Peninsular Malaysia: The objectives of this study were to identify and compare the economic status of the elderly- both males and females. The study examined gender differences in income sources as well as other assets owned by the elderly to determine their economic well being in old age. A sample of 1841 residents of Peninsular Malaysia aged 55- 75 were sampled. Significant differences were found to exist in the sources and amounts of income between elderly males and females. Although the majority of the elderly (both males and females) received income from their children, there were profound differences in the receipt of investment related and work related incomes among the elderly.
