The potential of clinical microbiology as a subject cannot be defined in a single paragraph. Role of a clinical microbiologist in patient care assumes greater significance in recent times owing to many factors. First among the reasons are included the menace of antimicrobial drug resistance. Global spread of microorganisms' resistant to most of the commonly used antibiotics should be considered as an alarming sign in health care profession. Microorganisms have long been evolving mechanisms to counter human defenses and be successful in establishing infections. Only with keen interest and continuous investigation, that a microbiologist could predict microbial behavior and be successful in providing better patient care.
