Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a writer, scholar and geographer based in San Francisco. His essays on arts and history have appeared in the New York Review of Books, Harper's, the Guardian, The Paris Review and American Prospect, amongst other publications. He has contributed chapters and introductions to several books, including an introduction to Patrick Leigh Fermor's The Traveler's Tree. He is a lecturer in Geography and American Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a geographer and writer whose work has appeared in the New York Review of Books, New Yorker, Harper's, the Believer, Artforum, and the Nation, among many other publications. Educated at Yale and Berkeley, he is the co-editor, with Rebecca Solnit, of Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas, and a visiting scholar at New York University's Institute for Public Knowledge. This is his first book.
