Details
Until the introduction of modern secular education in the early 20th c, without interruption, education in Ethiopia was in the able hands of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Church scholars and priests were not only confined merely to the administration of education in the church but also served their country competently in various capacities ranging from political leaders to the lowliest public functionaries. Besides, the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church was, throughout this period, the principal patron of culture and the arts. Ethiopia is today the proud inheritor of a rich tradition of maintaining various historical relics of antiquity for the simple reason that the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church has made considerable efforts to convert it into the repository of ancient literature and art for which achievement it deserves due credit. It is undeniable fact that the study of Ethiopian history seems difficult, surely incomplete, without the study of the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and its clergymen. This book provides readers an insight to the understanding of modern socio-cultural, religious and political history of central highland Ethiopia.
