Mapping Transnational Asian Cinema, Media, and Popular Culture
Details
Of all the film industries "out there," Hollywood
retains the most dominant share of the international
marketplace with 57% in 2006. This has lead to
growing concern that Hollywood's dominance of the
international cinematic and media marketplace, not
only stymies smaller foreign industries, but in a
cultural imperialistic way also influences foreign
societies and cultures. In this book I attempt to
map the borders, the point of intersection, and the
points of divergence, from an "Asia-first"
perspective. By looking at the popular culture world
this way, this book identifies for the reader the
stakes involved in neglecting to do a critical
examination and hopes to effect an appreciating for
the interstices between the cultural spaces.
