The history of silk industry in Assam dates back to the 11th Century, when Dharma pal wivited 26 families of weavers to settle in Sualkuchi village in Assam. It become a full-fledged wearing village when Ahoms occupied the area in the middle of 12th century. Muga, the Golden silk of Assam is made to the world by a French traveller Jean Joseph Tavernier(1662). The silk was the royal fabric of Ahom kings who ruled Assam for 6 centuries till 1826. weaving in Assam is one of the largest and oldest industry in Assam. it is a way of life in Assam since time immemorial. Muga silk is consider as the most important fabric in Assamese tradition.

Dr. Saikia has also served in Dibrugarh University in Centre for Studies in Geography as Assist. Prof. At present he is serving as Assistant Professor in M.C. College, Barpeta, Assam.
