New Blacks, New Whites, and the New Day
Details
Landmark legislation in the 1960's diversified andrevitalized migration flows into the US by allowingpreviously excluded Asian and African peoples. Muchhas been made of the massive recent migrations fromLatin America and Asia, but the presence of smallerBlack African, Black Caribbean, and White Europeanimmigrant groups in the contemporary US provides fora unique natural experiment. By comparing theachievements of the latter three groups and their US-born children, we can assess the impact of US racialdynamics on Black and White peoples not saddled withthe history and psychology of US racism. Are Whiteimmigrants the beneficiaries of unearned Whiteprivilege? Are Black immigrants subjected tosegregation and exclusion? Are such advantages anddisadvantages more or less pronounced as the US-bornchildren of these immigrants reach adulthood? Inshort, to what extent is the US willing or able toincorporate Black people into its social fabric inthe wake of the Civil Rights Movement? These andother pressing questions are systematicallyaddressed in this book.
