Filipinos are inherently multilingual, with 171 living languages (Mondez, 2013). This multilingualism can impact learners' spelling ability in their first language. While making mistakes, especially in spelling, is natural, grammarians and linguists have established rules to follow. However, according to Dordev (2015), orthographic rules cannot be learned without practice. Therefore, they should be introduced in the educational process at the beginning of elementary school. Spelling plays a vital role in written communication, and a single mistake in spelling can lead to misunderstandings. For this reason, the Department of Education (DepEd) has implemented Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE). This approach is based on various studies demonstrating that students who learn new concepts using their mother tongue tend to perform better in all areas of study. While this may hold true, it's essential to acknowledge that what works in one region or environment may not necessarily apply universally, as different regions have distinct needs and demands.
