Providing quality of service (QoS) guarantees is animportant objective in the design of thenext-generation wireless networks. In this book, weaddress the QoS provisioning problem from both thenetwork and the end system perspectives. In thefirst part of the book, we investigate the problemof statistical QoS provisioning from the networkperspective. We propose and develop a link-layerchannel model termed the effective capacitymodel. The effective capacity model captures theeffect of channel fading on the queueing behavior ofthe link, using a computationally simple yetaccurate model, and thus, is the critical device weneed to design efficient QoS provisioningmechanisms. We call such an approach to channelmodeling and QoS provisioning, as effective capacityapproach. With the effective capacity approach, weobtain link-layer QoS measures for variousscenarios. In the second part of the book, we focusour attention on QoS support from the end systemperspective, and present our adaptive QoS controlapproach for real-time video communication overwireless channels.

In the first part of the book, we investigate the problem of statistical QoS provisioning from the network perspective.
