Raising Cultural Awareness as part of EFL Teaching in Japan
Details
Intercultural Communication skills have become essential components of foreign language learning. As globalization and international exchanges increase, English as a foreign language is no longer limited to native speaker circles and standardized forms. English is being used by a greater diversity of people in different contexts for various purposes and in evolving methods, styles or forms. Language learning needs to reflect this change by addressing learners shifting needs. One of the key elements for communicating across cultures is developing an awareness of differences in perspectives and communication styles. These aspects of communication although important have traditionally been difficult to teach. The research described here explores cultural awareness raising as a viable pedagogy for developing communication skills among EFL learners in Japan. The first section investigates and discusses theory and the second section describes practical activities and exercises which can be easily applied to any language learning environment. In conclusion a summary of results and suggestions for further research are also provided.
