The capital was the city of Mahabad in northwestern Iran. The state itself encompassed only a small territory, including Mahabad, and the market towns of Piranshahr, Sardasht, Bukan, Naqada and Ushnaviya. The republic''s founding and demise was a part of the Iran crisis during the opening stages of the Cold War.
