Details
Managing dual relationships is important forprofessional Psychologists, however the ethicalviews of professional Psychologists towards theirsubordinates differs once the working relationshiphas ended. Due to their complexity, the AmericanPsychological Association does not maintain aproscription for engaging in nonsexual dualrelationships by psychologists. Further, noguidelines exist regarding relationships with formerstudents/supervisees.Psychological clinicians, educators, and supervisorssurveyed from the 2004 Membership Directory of theAPA were generally similar in ratings on each of the23 wide-ranging questions of ethical behaviorregarding current and former students/supervisees.Importantly, findings suggest that formerstudents/supervisees may be considered in a "no-man's land" by their former superiors, treated lesscautiously than present students/supervisees, butmore cautiously than the general public might betreated. Together, the present findings suggest thatthe APA should consider specific guidelines to bringclarity to the ethics of dual relationships withformer students/supervisees.
