This book presents disasters as common occurrence throughout the world but differ in magnitude and frequency. Some are attributed to natural phenomena while others are due to human activity. Mrs. Oloo who is specialist in disasters field takes the reader to understand that the natural hazards are related to specific natural phenomena but there is no question that many are exacerbated by human activities. The common view of natural disaster is due for a radical change, though triggered by natural events such as floods or earthquakes, most current disasters are increasingly man-made. Mrs. Oloo points out to the readers that disasters are occurrences which can be prevented or their impact reduced. Consequently, it can be argued that vulnerability of individuals, or communities is fundamentally a political and ecological concept which blends with socio-economic characteristics and relationships of the society in which they live. The book is a very resourceful handbook to undergraduate and postgraduate. The communities who are in disasters situation will also find this book very helpful.
