Details

Driver fatigue is a significant cause of roadfatalities all over the world. Preventive measuresdo not seem to alleviate this situation thus far. With the aim of advancing the field towards possiblesolutions to this problem, this work examines thevalue of psychophysiological variables to predictthe quality of driving performance under fatigue. This study was conducted with sleep deprivedsubjects performing a simulated driving task.Driving performance was analyzed in epochs andclassified to represent accurate, unstable ordeficient states of driving. EEG band powers, eyeblink activity and heart rate precedingthe states of driving were examined through logisticregression analyses. The results indicate that thepsychophysiological variables changed to a greatextent in the direction of our hypotheses fromaccurate to unstable or deficient driving. Weencourage other researchers to targetpsychophysiological variables as predictors ofdriver fatigue. This book is well suited to studentsinitiating their experimental assignments inPsychology. Human factors researchers andpractitioners can benefit from this reading as well.
