The Use of Negatives Among ESL Undergraduate Malay Students

This book is useful for teachers, students and anyone who wants to understand the errors that undergraduate students make in the use of negatives in their ESL writing. Even though the sample in this book comprises sixty undergraduate Malay students, the findings may be extended to other races too. The major causes for these errors in the use of negatives are due to interference from Malay grammar, the nature of English grammar, overgeneralization of linguistic rules, direct translation, inadequate learning, teaching and analogy. This book also discusses some ways of teaching negatives to ESL Malay students.

Kulwindr Kaur Sidhu is a Senior Lecturer at the English Language Department, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya. She has a B.A. (Hons.) TESL Degree from UKM, a Master s of English as a Second Language (MESL) from UM, and a PhD in Translation from UM. She has taught in the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.
