Towards 6th Generation of R
Details
Throughout the five identified R&D generations, thecomplexity of R&D has continually expanded. Drivershave been, the need to take more aspects intoaccount, the demand to cooperate and interact withmore actors outside the traditional R&D departments, and the necessity of efficient and effectivecommercialization.Apart from this evolution, a more radical shift ispredicted, one moving back to the roots of thecorporate research labs. The labs as such are not toresurface. The new set of approaches are a broadermulti-technology base for high-tech products and amore distributed technology sourcing structure. There will be a palette of technology-sourcingstrategies available, e.g. internal corporateventuring, independent research groups or networks, and internally driven R&D.The sixth generation of R&D management is expectedto re-focus the research part, and to enlarge andenhance the capabilities by connecting to looselytied multitechnology research networks. The pursuitof breakthroughs will take on other organizationalapproaches and open up for new players in the arena. In short, "chance favors only the prepared mind".
