Vintar is a 1st class and largest municipality in the province of Ilocos Norte, Philippines. According to the latest census, it has a population of 29,405 people in 6,282 households. In January 1574, Juan de Salcedo returned to the capital of his Encomienda, Vigan, bringing with him some Augustinian Missionaries to pioneer the evangelization of Ylocos and established a Spanish city, for the purpose of controlling the neighboring towns and villages. The year 1574 is significant for Vintar because that was the year when an Augustinian missionary from Sarrat arrived in town. Some say that he got to this place while hunting in the hills between Sarrat and Vintar.
