Details

Secondary-level education for girls was institutionalized inthe era of the Dual Monarchy in Hungary. This book provides ananalysis of visions and debates over the the so-called womanquestion in the journal Nemzeti N nevelés (National FemaleEducation) (1879-1919) with special emphasis on secondary-leveleducation for girls. The journal operated as a medium for publicdebate over a variety of conceptualizations of the educational eraof the Dual Monarchy in Hungary. Due to the twofold definition ofits purpose, namely that though it had a clear set of values andperspectives it preferred, the journal published articles thatdiscussed educational issues from different perspectives, and inthis way the journal as a significant part of the Hungarianwomen's movement could unite and could call for important socialinitiatives. This book is intended to contribute to the existingliterature by adding a more complex picture of and deeper insightsinto contemporary discourse and debate about women's roles andeducation in the field of history of education.
