A Drug Utilization Study in Post Surgical IPD Patients

This study was conducted in Department of Pharmacology in association with Department of General Surgery in Mahatma Gandhi hospital, Dr. S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur, Rajasthan, over a period of one year. This study was prospective, cross-sectional, observational type including all post-operative patients till discharged, in the Department of General Surgery. A total of three hundred patients of either sex and adult age groups who fulfilled inclusion criteria were included in this study. Patients who absconded/discharged against medical advice and patients referred to higher centre were excluded. Pregnant /lactating mothers, all pediatric patients and any patient who dies post-operatively before being discharged were also excluded from this study. Data like name, age, sex, diagnosis, ongoing treatment were recorded from patient's case file in a previously prepared Case Record Form (CRF). The relevant details of drug prescribed were analyzed by WHO prescribing indicators.
