A gendered view of the Media in Kenya

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of gender mainstreaming initiatives on the performance of female journalists in the media industry in Kenya. The study sought to determine the extent to which gender equality initiative, gender fairness initiative, gender responsiveness initiative and sexual harassment prevention initiative influence performance of female journalists in the media industry in Kenya. It further examined the moderating influence of media policy on the relationship between gender mainstreaming initiatives and performance of female journalists in the media industry in Kenya. The study established that the four initiatives influence the performance of female journalists. It concluded that gender mainstreaming initiatives significantly influence and account for changes in the performance of female journalists with sexual harassment initiative having the highest influence. Findings from the study further suggested that gender mainstreaming initiatives are important for the successful performance of female journalists in the media industry.

Ms. Joan Khayanga Wangusi is a PHD student in Project Planning and Management at the University of Nairobi. She holds a Master of Arts in Project Planning and Management from The University of Nairobi, Bachelor of Science in Information Sciences from Moi University and a Diploma in Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication.
