Details

Accident and emergency departments are the doorway to the hospital for acutely ill and injured patients. Whereas casualty departments have existed for over 150 years, they were often poorly staffed and managed. This book describes the fight to create a new medical specialty of accident and emergency medicine against much opposition from established specialties. The specialty was first recognised in 1972. The book also charts the major developments that occurred in the first 30 years of the specialty.

'...[This] should be of interest to practitioners within the speciality of A&E, and of value to those involved in research on emergency medicine, the NHS, and the development of disciplines in general.' - Medical History

'[This] is a must read for all who are committed to a career in Emergency Medicine. Henry Guly has produced a well-reseached history of our speciality since 1948. He shows how the needs of patients and the foresight of Emergency Medicine pioneers led to the devleopment of our speciality despite rigidity of thought by others.' - R Touquet, Emergency Medicine Journal
