A Need Based Approach to English Language Teaching
Details
Communicative English is included in the syllabus of technical colleges to develop soft skills in students to make them employable. The gaps identified in the personal and professional needs of learners show that the existing syllabi, teaching resources, methodology of teaching, and assessment mechanism followed in most engineering colleges do not help skills acquisition in mixed-ability classrooms. In the emerging global scenario driven by advancements in Science and Technology, the global engineer has to communicate and work in cross-cultural contexts for which fluent communication in English is an essential element. Therefore, this book advocates a co-operative, technology-driven and humanistic teaching methodology. The need for continuing language learning throughout engineering education for the acquisition of life skills such as effective communication skills, technical report writing, critical thinking ability, problem-solving ability, team spirit has been articulated. This book involves bridging this gap through a need-based approach to the teaching-learning process by integrating humanistic and technological factors of language learning for effective results.
