A Psychoanalytical Study of Manto's Stories

In this book, the author delves into the psychological underpinnings of selected short stories by Saadat Hassan Manto through the lens of Charles Rycroft's psychoanalytical framework, specifically his model of anxiety and neurosis. Drawing upon Freudian psychoanalysis as a foundational influence, the author illuminates the intricate emotional landscapes of Manto's characters in stories such as Colder Than Ice, A Wet Afternoon, Blouse, Khalid Mian, Shah Daulah's Mouse, and Toba Tek Singh. The study intricately weaves in critical perspectives on Manto's work, interpreting the often controversial themes-obscenity, fear, individualism, and social deviance-as profound reflections of inner turmoil and fractured humanity. By integrating Rycroft's insights on fear, shock, schizoid defenses, and obsession, the author unveils the thematic richness and psychological depth of Manto's narratives, situating them within a broader discourse on identity crises, setting new societal values, and measuring instinctive human psyche.

Mr. Atazaz Ahsan holds an M.Phil in English Literature and has been teaching literature at the University of Sargodha M. Bdin Campus, University of Sialkot and University of Gujrat. His short stories, translations, critique on Manto and an Urdu Play entitled "Manto Gustakh, Tarakh Tarakh" have been published in different Urdu Magazines.
