A Study of Life Expectancy for Countries of the United Nations

This book aims at finding the determinants of Life expectancy using Statistical methods. The data corresponds to 209 countries belonging to United Nations (UN) and was taken from the World Statistics Pocketbook published by the UN (2005). There are many variables considered under the broad categories of socioeconomic variables and environmental data. As the explanatory variables are highly correlated with each other and there are many variables Principal components method has been used to reduce the dimension and get independent components. Further Regression has been used to select the important determinants of life expectancy.

Linali Pathirathne graduated from the University of Colombo with Second Class Upper Division specializing in Statistics. For her final year research project she worked on United Nations data with the objective of finding the determinants of life expectancy. She was supervised by Professor Roshini Sooriyarachchi of the Department of Statistics.
