Access for Family Planning:Guidelines to Facilitate Family Planning use
Details
Literature reveals that unmet need for family planning among women living with HIV is high. This contributes to unintended pregnancy and unsafe abortion among them. To satisfy the increasing demand for FP at ART among women living with HIV, it is important to improve access to the full range of contraceptive methods at ART centres. The purpose of this study was to develop and describe guidelines to facilitate family planning utilisation for HIV-positive women of reproductive age attending ART services in Ethiopia. An exploratory sequential mixed method was used for the study. In the quantitative phase, a structured questionnaire based on TPB was used to assess the level of demand and unmet need for FP among 422 participants. In the qualitative phase, the researcher used a phenomenological approach to understand the lived experience of the participant users and service providers. In the last phase, guidelines were developed to facilitate family planning utilisation for HIV-positive women of reproductive age attending Antiretroviral Treatment services. The study highlighted factors facilitating and hindering the FP service at facilities including providers-clients interaction.
