This study utilizes the rich archives which survive at Durham Cathedral to examine the way in which accounting methods and systems were adopted and adapted to manage income and expenses, assets and liabilities in changing economic environments.

Dr Alisdair Dobie is a senior lecturer in accounting at the University of Stirling. He studied history at Edinburgh and Durham universities and qualified as a chartered accountant with a major international accounting firm. He has published a range of papers relating to medieval accounting.
